EngenhATOMS

ATOMS is a laboratory with important activities and contributions to the applied thermodynamics community, however its history also reveals a great contribution to scientific popularization, connecting applied science and society, and thus training even better professionals.

In 2024, these efforts have been consolidated through the approval a project registered at UFRJ:

"EngenhATOMS: from atom to product, from the laboratory for everyone."

From atom to product

The EngenhATOMS project emerged from scientific dissemination actions that the Applied Thermodynamics and Molecular Simulation (ATOMS) research group at UFRJ has been developing since 2020.

Researchers and professors naturally became involved with scientific dissemination through social media, seminars with professionals in the field, broadcasted on the ATOMS YouTube channel, to more recent participation in various public scientific outreach events.

In these spaces, the group has been acting through immersive exhibitions, playful experiments, and guided tours of all our experimental laboratories.

The activities contribute to the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students who, as protagonists of the action, experience the reality of schools with diverse backgrounds and the general public, challenging them to use playfulness so that technical knowledge reaches the target audience. This learning process is summarized in a phrase attributed to Albert Einstein:

“You do not really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother.”

From laboratory to everyone

In this project, actions with scientific content connect applied science to everyday life, where thermodynamics and transport phenomena are attractively presented to children, adolescents, and the entire society, highlighting their contributions to building an innovative future, designed by scientists.
